Sylvia Mary Burwell is a government and non-profit executive who has been the 15th president of American University. She has held the position since 2017. She also made history as the first woman to serve as its president. At one point, she also served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Her husband, Stephan Burwell stayed home to take care of their two children during her tenure. He is a law practitioner who she met in 2005 when she was working for the Gates foundation. He popped the question some time later in her favorite childhood park. They were married by 2007.
