Japan’s World War II Orphans Tell Their Inspiring Tales Of Resilience And Recovery

Going Back Home

In 1981, the Chinese and Japanese governments agreed to collaborate on the problem of reuniting orphans in China with their families. Those who were identifiable were allowed to embark on a search for their families and relatives. It also meant breaking the news to most Japanese war orphans who had settled with Chinese families about their true identities.

Most were grown-ups by that time and had the choice of returning to Japan or choosing to fully embrace their lives in China. Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences’ Guan Yaxin estimates that between 1981 to the year 2000, 2,121 Japanese orphans returned to Japan in search of their relatives.
