Kaneda was only nine years old when she disembarked from a night train that had just arrived in Tokyo. Her journey started in Japan’s Miyagi region, where she was amongst the few who had fled before the firebombings struck. It still haunts her to this day, knowing that they had escaped the attacks just by hours.
She lost her two sisters and mother to the war and their family store. Kaneda dreamed about being a school teacher, but life was never the same after the firebombings, and she abandoned such pursuits. The government had long rejected redress requests for the firebombing victims.
