The firebombing survivors feel like they were not only forgotten by their leaders but also by history. Post-war governments eventually extended 60 trillion yen (estimated $531M) to the families of bereaved veterans, but survivors of the war, more so the orphaned children, never received any help. In contrast, survivors of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima attacks receive medical support.
Mari Kaneda’s life completely changed following the firebombings. Like a majority of WWII orphans, she endured harsh conditions living with relatives. The stigma and pain stay with her decades later, and it has even forced her to abandon her dreams along the way.
