From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland
No Mozzies
Iceland is home to a surprisingly large variety of insects, with more than 1,300 different species, but one notable absence is the mosquito. Despite its abundance in many parts of the world, this pesky bloodsucker is nowhere to be found on the island due to the country’s cold temperatures.
Mosquitoes, like many insects, are cold-blooded and require warm environments to thrive, which Iceland’s chilly climate simply doesn’t provide. Unfortunately, Icelanders still have to deal with other biting insects like midges, which can cause itchy, swollen bites that often turn into blisters, and easily make their way into homes through open windows and doors.
