They Celebrate Beer Day
Iceland’s experience with alcohol prohibition was similar to the United States, but it lasted much longer, a staggering 80 years from 1908 to 1989. However, the nation now celebrates the end of the ban with a unique tradition. Every year on March 1, Icelanders come together to celebrate “Bjordagur” or Beer Day, a national holiday that marks the day when beer was legalized again.
The Icelandic Annual Beer Festival is also held annually, showcasing the nation’s beer-making prowess. The passion for brewing in Iceland is evident in their international recognition, as Icelandic breweries have won numerous awards at the prestigious World Beer Awards.
