From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland

An Elf School

Iceland’s fascination with the supernatural isn’t limited to trolls and other mystical creatures. The country is home to an actual “Álfaskólinn” or Elf School, which serves as a center for learning about Icelandic folklore and mythology. This unique institution was founded by Magnus Skarphedinsson, a self-proclaimed elf expert who sought to document the countless elf encounters reported in the country over the years.

To date, the school has recorded over 1,400 stories of elf sightings and teaches visitors about the five different types of elves and other hidden beings that call Iceland home. It’s no wonder that over 60% of Icelanders believe in their existence!
