Feel Loved By These Traffic Lights

In 2008, Iceland suffered an economic crash that left its citizens reeling. But the northern town of Akureyri found a simple yet uplifting way to boost people’s spirits. They added heart fixtures to their traffic lights, reminding everyone to stay positive despite the difficult times. Former Akureyri mayor Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson praised the gesture as a symbol of hope and optimism.

Located just 62 miles from the Arctic Circle, Akureyri is the second-largest urban area in Iceland after the capital Reykjavík. It’s home to many attractions, including the Botanical Garden, which features almost every plant native to the Nordic island, as well as species from Greenland and other countries.
