From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland
Sheep In Abundance
In Iceland, the sheep population is twice that of the human population. With the frigid weather, Icelanders rely on their woolly friends to provide them with the cozy sweaters and other warm clothing necessary for survival. In the ’70s, there were almost one sheep for every person in Iceland, totaling almost 900,000.
However, this number has decreased over the years, and as of 2022, there were approximately 500,000 sheep remaining, according to Campervan Iceland. Despite the decline, Icelanders still value their wool industry, and the iconic Icelandic sweater, or lopapeysa, remains a popular item of clothing, both locally and abroad.
