Behind The Face Of An Angel: Audrey Hepburn’s Success & Secret Past
Audrey Kathleen Ruston Almost Became A Dentist
Audrey Kathleen Hepburn-Ruston was born in Brussels, Belgium. And that’s important. Because English-sounding names were dangerous during World War II, she changed her name in 1940 to Edda van Heemstra, using her mother’s maiden name. It was only after the war, in 1948, that she began calling herself Audrey Hepburn.
After her ballet dreams were halted, Audrey trained to be a dental assistant instead. But before she could finish training, she was discovered by a talent scout, who helped her land a role in the 1951 Broadway musical Gigi. And thus her fruitful acting career began.
