She Saw Anne Frank As A Kindred Spirit

Audrey and Holocaust victim Anne Frank were born in the same year and lived only 60 miles away from each other during the German occupation of the Netherlands. When Audrey read Anne’s Diary of a Young Girl, she was shocked to find that the book mirrored all the horrors she had experienced.

When director George Stevens made a film adaptation of Anne’s diary in 1959, her father, Otto Frank, the lone survivor in her family, requested that Audrey portray Anne. However, Audrey turned down the role because she felt too close to Anne and her story.
