From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland
No Public Railway System
Iceland’s lack of a public railway system is a result of the country’s sparse population and harsh weather conditions. While there is a railway system for transporting goods and produce, it is not open to the public. However, to honor Iceland’s Viking heritage, a “Sword Road” was created on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, which leads to many popular sights.
This road is a nod to Iceland’s Nordic ancestors who first settled on the island in the 9th century. Despite not having a public railway system, Iceland still has plenty of other transportation options, such as buses, taxis, and rental cars, to help locals and tourists get around.
