From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland

Europe’s Biggest Banana Plantation

Iceland, despite its harsh weather and short growing season, has managed to cultivate a thriving agriculture industry with the help of geothermal energy. While it may not be the top banana producer in the world, it holds the title of the largest producer in Europe.

Using this natural energy source, the Icelandic Agricultural University has been able to grow up to 4,500 pounds of bananas annually, an impressive feat considering Iceland’s limited arable land, which amounts to only 1% of the country’s total area. Nevertheless, Icelandic farmers have found ways to cultivate crops such as potatoes, kale, turnip, and even subtropical fruits like papayas, thanks to their ingenuity and resourcefulness.
