Despite its presence in over 100 countries with more than 38,000 locations, there is one place where McDonald’s hasn’t been able to establish itself: Iceland. Surprisingly, the fast food giant doesn’t have a single outlet in the country, which has a population of just over 346,000.
The last McDonald’s restaurant in Iceland closed its doors in 2009 and, since then, the chain has been unable to make a comeback. However, this doesn’t mean that Icelanders don’t indulge in fast food. They frequent restaurants often, but it seems that the allure of Iceland’s natural wonders, like volcanoes, hot springs, and fjords, was too much for McDonald’s to compete with.
