From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland
Living With 130 Volcanoes
Iceland is a volcanic island located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Due to the constant movement of these plates, magma fills the gaps, leading to volcanic eruptions. With 130 volcanoes in Iceland, 30 of them are still active, making the island a hotbed of geological activity.
Despite the risks, Iceland’s volcanic eruptions have also resulted in incredible natural wonders. For instance, the Westman Islands were heavily damaged by eruptions, but one unique landmark emerged from the destruction: a basalt rock formation that resembles an elephant’s head. This remarkable natural sculpture is a testament to Iceland’s fiery and unpredictable geology.
