From 100 Words for Wind to Safe Tap Water–Surprising Facts You Didn’t Know About Iceland

An Old Tree-friendly Norse Tradition

Even in the most unlikely of places, Iceland’s magical folklore makes an appearance. The Hólavallagarður cemetery in Reykjavik is a perfect example of this. According to local legend, the cemetery was once a Viking burial ground. The trees that now fill the cemetery were reportedly planted on the graves, a tradition from Norse mythology.

Visitors to the cemetery can now touch these trees as a way to connect with their deceased loved ones. While organic burial pods like the Capsula Mundi and Bio Urn are gaining popularity in the United States in 2023, each state has its own unique set of rules and regulations for natural burials.
